Prioritize Safety
If your safety is at immediate risk, call 911. Otherwise, get to a safe place where you are out of danger.
Seek Medical Attention
Consider visiting one of our several response locations in the emergency department, where you can request to speak with a SAFE examiner about your options at no cost, 24/7.
Note: Acting within 72 hours after an assault is best for getting proper medical care and gathering evidence. However, you still have the option to receive a SAFE exam up to 10 days after an assault and 14 days after strangulation.
Know Your Rights
If you're 12 years or older, can legally consent to medical forensic care after a sexual assault.
You have the choice to report the assault to law enforcement immediately or delay your decision to report.
You can seek medical forensic care, even if you're unsure about reporting the assault to law enforcement.
You have the right to a confidential advocate during your SAFE exam and can choose if you want them to stay.
